Amazon is leveraging RFID tags attached to products, expanding the range of stores where its “Just Walk Out” technology can be applied, including clothing retailers and other non-food stores.

“We’ve introduced a brand-new type of ‘Just Walk Out’ technology store, where customers can pick up clothes, hats, shoes, and more, then simply walk out of the store by swiping a credit card, debit card, or hovering their palm over the Amazon One palm recognition device (even while wearing purchased items). No more waiting in line at the checkout! This new RFID feature of ‘Just Walk Out’ is a pioneering checkout-free technology. It complements our computer vision-based service, enabling retailers to offer a broader range of clothing, accessories, and other soft goods,” explained Jenkins.

“Each item sold in the store has a unique RFID tag, similar in appearance to standard clothing labels. Customers only need to enter the store, pick up their desired items, and then exit through the exit gates. As they pass through the exit gates, RFID readers will scan the RFID tags on their clothes and other accessories. The payment will be deducted from the credit card (or payment information associated with their Amazon One profile). Shortly after leaving the store, customers will be able to view their purchase details on the justwalkout website.”

“We first tested RFID ‘Just Walk Out’ technology at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington, only used in a few games earlier this year when the Seattle Kraken hockey team’s season ended,” he added. “After positive feedback from Kraken fans and arena officials, we have now launched this technology at Lumen Field, the home stadium of the Seattle Seahawks NFL team.”
